The Earliest Electronic Piano Keyboard
The Fender Rhodes was arguably the first Electronic Piano Keyboard that was used the most in Rock and Roll bands as well as Jazz, and some county music artists. This little Keyboard had a funky sound, and was well accepted by many keyboard players in the earlier Rock and Roll scene. You might say it sounded like a piano with a little organ mixed in.
It was first offered by the Fender Company in 1965 and artists from Rock, Jazz, Country, Contemporary Christian Music, began to quickly embrace this new Electronic Piano Keyboard. Soon it began to gain a foot hold, and became regarded as the number one choice in keyboard Musical Instruments.
Artists like Billy Preston, Phil Collins, Stevie Wonder, Bob James, and Paul McCartney have all used the Fender Rhodes in their music performances and recordings.
The Fender Rhodes was very important in the development of the Electronic Piano Keyboard. Although it was not Digital… It helped to inspire future innovations in Digital Keyboard technology. Actually the first Fender Rhodes used Mechanical Organ technology in the beginning. In 1980 The Casio Company began to make it’s mark and to dominate this industry.
Soon after Yamaha and Roland began to offer their own line of Digital Sampling Workstations and Keyboards.
All of the major companies offering Digital Pianos began using modern digital sampling to reproduce the sound of each analog piano note. The Casio Company produced the first Digital pianos features including working pedals, weighted keys, multi-voices, and MIDI interfaces. This feature had to be created by synthesizing the dampening effect made by damper pedals on acoustic pianos, since there are no strings to vibrate like a true acoustic piano.
